Comicbits - Jan. 25th, 2008

January 25th, 2008

What’s there to say? Stuff was really good this week.

Blue Beetle #23 (DC Comics)
Although this certainly isn’t as cataclysmic as the Sinestro Corps storyline was, it certainly follows the same golden rules that make for awesome comics. Step one: lay the ground work. Tell some fun, small stories, and get yourself a playground. Step two, weave some puzzle pieces into the stories. It’s fun to do, and it lets people know that you’re building. Step three: tear that motherfucker down. Once you have it all in place, pay it all off. Since you’ve built so much, it’s going to be great. And in Blue Beetle? It is. SO. FREAKING. GREAT. I want this title to continue indefinitely - and its sale numbers aren’t the greatest. How about giving a great book a shot? You’ll be glad you did.

Hack/Slash #8 (Devil’s Due)

This book hasn’t let me down, but the shit I took from the other guys at the shop when we were putting the comics in the files was something else. Although that’s to be expected, when an arc is focusing on lesbian death rituals that occur in hot tubs.

Amelia Rules! #19 (Renaissance Press)
If only this comic was around when I was younger, I probably would’ve turned out… well, probably just as bad, but at least I’d have the experience of “sharing” the odd strains that a divorce has on kids with someone… albeit a fictional someone. Each issue of Amelia is packed with the hard stuff kids have to deal with, and it Jimmy Gownley always manages to carry it off with a deft hand - never acting preachy. About 3 issues come out a year, but man, is this book worth the wait.

Authority Prime #4 (Wildstorm/DC)
The problem with the Authority is that the threats always become so big you really have to think long and hard to give them something ridiculously impossible to do. In steps Christos Gage, who not only handles the Authority well (even with the two characters who can blink things out of existance), but crafts a couple of battles with the current and old Stormwatch teams that are just damn entertaining to watch. This guy needs to get his own ongoing again, because he’s friggen awesome.
