ComicBits - BEST BOOKS OF THE WEEK
January 28th, 2008#3 - Afterburn #1 (Red 5 Comics)
This issue starts with the sun melting half of the earth and ends with a fight involving mutant pirate gangs and Chinese Death Sharks. To say that I didn’t enjoy such a book would be ridiculous. Heck - when all is said and done, every single book in the Red 5 Comics stable is pretty darn awesome. And not only are the stories great, but they come out on their release day - every time, without fail. This is an independent company to watch. Keep up the great work, guys who won’t read this blog.
#1 - Johnny Hiro #3 (AdHouse Books)
Is this the best pick because Fred Chao gives me a shout-out in the back matter? Frick no. This is #1 because it was just balls-out awesome from cover to cover. It starts, as always, with a touch of the mundane and then integrates fantastic elements like… oh, lets say 47 Ronin warriors and it feels perfectly natural. If I had to describe it, its vaguely a kung fu version of Scott Pilgrim. And as you all know, when Scott Pilgrim comes out I close for Scott Pilgrim day. The next Johnny Hiro that comes by will get the same treatment.
