Et Cetera - January 31st, 2008
January 31st, 2008Through sleet and rain and snow - my reviews don’t go through! Each week, I usually have some overflow to get to comics-wise, so I figured… new feature covering the formerly forgotten! Let’s get to it.
Young Avengers Presents #1 (Marvel Comics)
This better mean that the new Young Avengers series is coming down the pike soon. Have Heinberg plot if that’s what it takes to get it happening. Make him the idea man - someone else can script it. In fact, part of me wonders if this isn’t a “try-out” to see who has the chops. I know that Brubaker is probably too big a name to be the “junior” on a title, and I think he’s lended to this title more to pack a bit of sales punch (how awesome is it that Brubaker has sales punch. ART WINS!) but some of the coming writers? Brian Reed? Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa? (By the way - I can’t WAIT to see Alina Urusov’s work on that issue…) MATT FRACTION??!? Yeah. YEAH. I could work with that. And oh yeah - the issue was pretty awesome too.
Proof #3 (Image Comics)
Who loves a good new indie series? Ooh! Ooh! This book has been going at a good clip - and all the little factoids…. er… cryptoids that are jammed into each issue is pretty sweet. The arts great, the stories are great… if I was someone good at selling a comic book series to people, I’d totally be pushing this on you like I was the king shit of selling nerd crack. But until I gain those awesome powers, you’ll just have to settle for me telling you to grab this with your haunches.
The Foundation #1 (Boom! Studios)
Set up issues always bother me a little - how can you talk about them without spoilers, when there is only one piece to the entire issue? I submit, you can’t. And frig, it’s not like I’m any kind of professional with this blog, so whatevs. The Foundation seems to be an organization that keeps fate on track. Maybe. The central character seems to be thinking about fate and destiny and all that it entails - and how working for a corporation that SAYS they take care of the future might not be the brightest idear. Interesting concept - it’ll be interesting to see where this one goes.
