Sunday Comic Round-Up (February 3rd, 2008)

February 3rd, 2008

Reviews? Psh. If I wanted to be constructive, I’d post elsewhere. The Sunday Round-Up is all about what my comics made me feel in my awesome gland during the week - nothing more, nothing less. As always, we save the best until Monday, so check back then for the goodest of the good. Until then…

Ultimate Spider-Man #113 (Marvel Comics)
Going to the beach, having a bonefire, hanging out with all of your friends, not having beer. ( Hey kids! Spider-Man is straight edge! be cool like him and his buds! Tell your friends!) When Bendis is on, he is on and this issue of Spidey brought high school rushing back to me. The jobs, the relationships, the holy friggen’ terror that is attempting to be cool around the girl(s) you like so that you don’t ruin everything for ever! Yeah. Yeah. That’s what I remember. You know, except for the part where the one guy rides in on an ice flow, and that other person bursts into flames.

JSA Classified #34 (DC Comics)
On the cover are the words “Like sands through the hourglass”… which of course, made me think of the soap “Days of Our Lives”. My mom used to watch that show every day when I was younger - used to have a day-home, kid care operation, and when that music came on, it was nap time. Shut the heck up kids, and go to your rooms - it’s time for stories. Anyway, that’s what this comic reminded me of. Productive review, yeah?

Avengers: The Initiative #9 (Marvel Comics)
And so the culling begins. You know, I thought this title was getting unwieldy for characters by issue 7 - and then when a whole new slew of recruits were added, I really started worrying just what was going to happen to my poor brain while reading this title. Well, turns out, I’m not going to have to worry as ANGRY FRICKEN’ DEATH starts ripping through the ranks NOW. And the best part is? It was all coming down the pike, building for issues. THAT, is how you write a comic. Kudos, to the wonder twin team of Slott and Gage (and the wonderful pics by Caselli and Rudoni).

Madman Atomic Comics #6 (Image Comics)
Can I forgive Mike Allred for being late just because he’s ginchy? Turns out I can, and I will. It’s Madman… IN SPAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaace! Somebody dies! And somebody else is hopefully not dead, but might actually be! And aliens just might be bitches! Here’s hoping for a continuing, long run for Madman once again.

Batman #673 (DC Comics)
In which Joe Chill says the words “razzamatazz pajamas jazz”. Also, Bat-Mite. I still believe that a Grant Morrison book needs to be experienced in an environment where absolutely nothing is happening around you to fully grasp the idea’s he’s pulling down from the ether - and boy howdy, does this book make a good argument for that belief. Still an interesting read.

Daredevil #104 (Marvel Comics)
Man, life kind’ve always sucks for Matt Murdock - and they always seem to go straight to hell right after he gets a little bit of happy. But really, I wouldn’t be reading this book if at the end of every issue, everything was hugs and roses and a pocket full of dreams… soooo… I think I’ve learned a little something about myself today: I am a terrible person. Whodathunkit

Jack of Fables #19 (Vertigo/DC)
I love the idea of exploring Americana - all of the ideas that comprise of the “mythology of America itself - but hot damn, did I love me the look at the “Great White North”. In one page, it had every single stereotype that comprises my beloved Canader, from the guy who says “eh?” at the end of his sentences, to the Eskimo living in an igloo, to the sasquatch, the hockey, the cold, the beer, and the best part: the word TOQUES. I love that damn word. And that was just one page of this book.
