Best of the Week
February 4th, 2008…for comics released on Jan 30th, 2008.
This week was a white-knuckler in terms of figuring out which book got the top marks. Go below the fold for the good.
5. Captain America #34 (Marvel Comics)
When Captain America throws his mighty shield…
All those who chose to oppose his shield must yield!!!!
And that’s all you need to know.
4. Wormwood, Gentleman Corpse: Calamari Rising #1 (IDW Publishing)
Thoom! Shit’s about to go down! Thoom! Ben Templesmith proves once more that he can write just as good as he can draw - and he can draw really damn good. Squidlies are coming for Wormwood, and he’s not going down without making a whole lot of shit go down. It’s going to be a spectacular ride.
3. Proof #4 (Image Comics)
Do you know what’s better than promising a cup of tea and a chat between bigfoot and el chupacabra? Delivering on that promise, and adding raw hot dogs. This book delivers in every way it should. At turns it’s creepy, funny, heartfelt and awesome. Plus, there is a character named Elvis who has the 50s slick-back hair - and it comes out on time EVERY MONTH. This storyling concludes in the next issue, and while this one didn’t really have a cliffhanger, I still can’t wait.
2. Y, The Last Man #60 (Vertigo/DC)
And there shall be, an endening! You know, this book was good right up until the very end, when it said the story would conclude in the pages of Countdown.
…
Okay, so maybe that didn’t actually happen. But if I actually told you all the things that were balls-out awesome about it, I would probably find myself lynched to death within a matter of internet days. Seriously… everything from EVERY SINGLE PAGE to the title and the credits of this issue are ridiculously great. All those worried, breathe a sigh of relief.
1. Suburban Glamour #3 (Image Comics)
Better than Y? You bet your ass. I’m not really sure why. It’s more of a gut thing than anything else. Both books had some great moments, but in the end, I think I connected with the story in this issue more. So, for the record? I, Brandon Schatz, feel more connected to a teenage girl discovering she a part of a world chock-a-block full of magic than the post apocalyptic future of being the last man alive. And nobody is surprised.
That’s it for this week’s releases - make sure to come back here for more comic posts through out the week, and while you’re at it, why not check out a Lost Toast strip or two? It’ll do your body good.
Until next time…
-B.
